This piece changed completely from where it started. Every time I tried to force it in one direction, it resisted. It only came together once I let go and allowed the sculpture to become what it wanted to be.
If I had to describe it in one word, it would be equanimity. That quiet balance between opposite emotions. Joy and sadness. Courage and fear. Music and silence. None of them last forever, and learning not to cling to either extreme is something I constantly try to remind myself.
This sculpture became my reflection on that idea. We are all searching for balance somewhere in the middle, and maybe that’s where peace lives.
Looking back, I don’t think I could have made this piece without the conversations and friendships that surrounded me during that period. Sometimes the work grows because we do.
